What's interesting to me is that he (and a few others) are coming out strongly in way they can never back off / reverse

We're used to politicians attacking each other in a primary and then endorsing each other when they drop out. But this stuff, there's no way in August Romney can turn around and say "Yeah, I think he'll be great, vote for him!" Not that Trump cares. But it does make me wonder how much this is resonating with some classic Republican voters and what they will do.
And it especially makes me wonder if someone takes a third party run if Trump's the nominee in order to derail him.
