Prior to DADT, it was a crime to have gay sex in the military. DADT was the best compromise that was going to happen in the 90s. People were not going to accept open gays in the military at that time. Progress comes in steps most times, not in leaps. Bill (and I think Hillary) gets that.

It's wonderful that Bernie came out in support of gay marriage earlier (I mean that) but it was also politically not problematic for the Senator from *Vermont* to do so (hell, it may have even helped him).
