I don't for a minute think it was 'coming around'. I think Obama and Clinton were already there but could not say it

unless they wanted to lose. They needed enough *the voting populace* to come around before they could voice their true feelings (which then helped to push the coming around of more of the populace).
Imagine if Bill Clinton had suggested during one of his campaigns that he inhaled, he liked it, and he wanted to legalize it. He would have lose. Times, and the country's beliefs, change.
