Not in the alliance either? Then you really need to build your walls and your hideouts.

Your walls only give you the maximum defense bonus if it's the same level or higher than your town hall.
The best advice Mel gave me and I pass it on to everyone is..
hideouts, hideouts, hideouts. They keep people from seeing into your town and people are much less likely to attack if they can't see what you're storing in your town.
Slow down your growth and build up your town.
I keep my people barely happy so I'm not forced to keep upgrading my town halls so often.
