from my experience they try the same carrier first

Had that in London once. I missed my 6pm flight because the radar was broken and there was a huge queue. The guy who 'helped' me said he had booked me on the first flight NEXT MORNING. I said I won't accept that and he shrugged and said I would have to do the rebooking myself then.
I queued another hour, they said there were no more seats on British Airways ..
but if I accepted to fly Swiss Air there would be a seat the same evening?
Jerks.
Have never flown BA again since.
