It can work for kids that aren't predisposed to drug abuse but for those that are it does little to nothing. -- (edited)

Abstinence education has shown through the years to be minimally effective. There needs to be more than just telling kids to say no because kids are naturally curious and without a real education as to why using drugs is dangerous and problematic they're likely to experiment. There also needs to be a better focus on identifying those that are likely to use drugs and need special attention; those that have family members that abuse drugs/alcohol or have troubled families. For those kids just saying no doesn't do enough and they can easily be lost.
