It depends on where you view the Rapture in relation to the Tribulation and the actual return of Christ.

The view taken in the Left Behind series is based on a reading of various prophetic books that says the Rapture will mark the very beginning of the Apocalypse. Since there will be no need for a Christian Church during the Apocalypse, the first step is for God to call all true-believers home. Then, the Antichrist will reign on earth for seven years before Christ returns.
And during that seven-year time, anyone who is a non-believer can convert to being a true believer.
