Act 1 - Introducing our new Ghostbusters. Slackers (think Seth Rogen and James Franco) use a lump sum of money (inheritance, lottery winnings) to purchase a Ghostbusters franchise in a suburb from the big franchisees in the neighboring city (picture Chicago and Lake Forest) because it seems like a cool thing to do. As the first indications that ghost busting has become all about making money, the big franchisees are douches who sell and re-sell franchises when the last one goes under (Jim Carrey would be great as one of these douches).
We meet our first classic Ghostbuster, Winston, who's job it is to train new Ghostbusters (who better to train Ghostbusters than the first trainee?) He'll have a large part in the movie as he mentors the team.
In spite of themselves, the upstarts become good and start venturing into Chicago territory, causing strife with the douches. But then they encounter a large paranormal event which incapacitates Winston (captured? hospitalized?) and the Chicago team is unwilling or unable to help.
Act 2 - The Lake Forest Ghostbusters turn to their online help system called "E.G.O.N." (make up your own clever acronym) which has been assisting them in their job. But when they enter a certain keyword related to the large paranormal event, it sets off an alarm at Ghostbusters HQ.
Cut to gleaming office building in NYC. This is Ghostbusters HQ. Zoom in on the president's office. Ray is in charge, but he doesn't have a mind for business. The company is run by corporate drones. We see Ray (under pressure from drones and lackeys) agreeing to numerous corporate measures which dishearten him and make us question the goodwill of the company.
Cut to Egon in a basement lab, the mad scientist inventing new ghost busting technology. He's being assisted by Louis. (Louis could be the corporate accountant telling Ray how much money the company is raking in selling franchises, but I don't want to make Louis the bad guy.) Make sure there's a scene of some young corporate tool reminding Egon that he's a washed up old man making tinker toys.
Where's Peter?
Cut to Janine in a call center cubicle farm. She's one of many people answering phones from franchisees ("That's right, you don't cross the streams." etc, etc.) when a pop-up appeals on her screen advising her of an E.G.O.N. alert. She reacts in a bit of a panic. She takes out her super secret Ghostbusters phone and sends out a text.
Act 3 - The text arrives for Ray and Egon. Of course, the message is "We've got one!" Ray and Egon must rally the old guard. But they need Peter (either to complete the team, or because he knows something about the ancient evil that can destroy the world?)
Cut to a beachside bar in Key West where Peter is enjoying his margarita. Ray and Egon - with Louis in tow - come to Peter and try to convince him to join (toss in Dana cameo?) Peter seems unconvinced until he's told that they need him to save the world. Throwing back his drink, he says "Well why didn't you say so?" and he joins them.
Cut to Chicago where the classic Ghostbusters arrive in helicopter. Is it necessary to retrieve Winston from the hospital, or are they rescuing Winston? Perhaps rescuing Winston is what convinces Peter to return to the fold? Chicago Ghostbusters are not up to the challenge of fighting the ancient evil. Classic Ghostbusters team up with Lake Forest Ghostbusters. Ancient evil is defeated. World is saved.
