I just grabbed a conversation chart I have. The chart only goes up to 13.5. An a1c of 13.5 corresponds to a 3 month average blood sugar of 403. -- nm

American Diabetes Association's online calculator gave me a average blood sugar of 446 with that a1c.

A possible issue that occurs when blood sugars are too high or out of whack is called diabetic ketoacidosis (dka). DKA can lead to death. -- (link)

Those are all long term issues from high sugars... but super high sugars in the short term can result in diabetic ketoacidosis which can be deadly. -- nm

HbA1c of 6.5 means you have diabetes... he is substantially higher. I think the lab may not be able to measure it above 18. -- nm
