Nah, I think buying and holding is viable to have a little fun. I would not have lasted 8 years otherwise.

Bonds are more a pain in the ass. They have to be managed regularly (you can't just let them mature like a stock or they will bite you in the ass), and require far more number crunching and less fun (IMHO) than regular stocks.
