My first wife and I sold our home in Knoxville in order to move back home and take care of her dying father. After he passed, we were ready to move out of her parents' hope, our temporary residence.
When we started looking at houses, one of the places we considered was a condo complex that had popped up in the field connected to the backyard of my house, a former farming area that was becoming a suburban neighborhood.
About 100 residences were there, but only one was available for sale. It was literally the closest condo to my parents' back door. We're talking 100 steps at most. Amazingly, we liked the place enough that we still considered it.
We changed our mind the first time we mentioned this to Mom. She got so excited that she immediately started talking about adding a gate to the back of their fence so that they could drop by any time.
If she was calculatedly trying to dissuade us from the purchase, it was a masterstroke. I...don't think that was her intent, though.
Thomas Wolfe was a wise man.
