First, don't make fun of the water towers. I love them and it'll get you on the list. Second, they're necessary not just here but all over the country

Buildings over I think six stories have problems pumping water to the higher floors. To get up really high you would need huge pipes to handle the amount of pressure needed to push the water all the way up. Since that's not really feasible the water tower does the work by storing the water and having gravity take it down to the higher floors. Also, it's easier to have one big pipe to run to the tower as opposed to many inside the building.
They are necessary, do a great job and look awesome!
