Jetblue feels like a better organic match to me as far as building out a more national airline, but there are benefits to both Alaska and Jetblue.

Jetblue is very east coast oriented. Virgin America is very west coast oriented. The combo would give them a better bi-coastal presence (though the middle of the country would still be a sever weak spot for the combined airline).
Alaska is very west coast oriented. Virgin America is ver west coast oriented. The combined airline would become a powerhouse player on the West coast but would remain weak in the east (not to mention the middle of the country) so it would still be a heavily regional airline versus a national airline
