Southwest's goal was clearly to get rid of a competitor, but they still paid a billion less than Alaska is apparently going to pay for Virgin.
Again, Virgin flies to 24 destinations and has 60 planes.
Airtran flew to 69 destinations and had around 140 planes. (88 of those planes were 717s which were quickly offloaded to Delta because Southwest only flies 737s)
This 2.5 billion price is *bonkers*
