they send Eugene on a suicide mission, stuff the RV with gas apparently and going to ram a barricade with the hope/thought/etc that the RV explodes...making the Saviors think that everyone in the RV is dead. But that mission fails completely...how?

It's just assumed Eugene screwed up, the Saviors were smarter, etc. But, it's bad writing to omit something that critical. Again, they just wanted to get to Rick the Sniveler.
