In response to "(for those of you that care) one Georgia senator's thoughts on the Religious Freedom bill veto -- (edited)" by Strongbad

But what are your thoughts?

I agree with Will and Jack, and I'm going to add this:

From his statement (with my highlights at ****):

"The objection came from Governor Deal who demanded that the bill be stripped of the language which provided religious freedom protection for individuals and businesses, **** leaving protection only for pastors/clergy and non-profits ****. Meeting this requirement which was necessary for his support, this bill then passed out of the Georgia General Assembly on March 16th and went to the governor’s desk. But, **** despite the fact that all of his demands were met ****, Governor Deal vetoed HB 757 – the law titled “An Act to Protect Religious Freedom” on March 28th."

From the helpful summary of the bill you provided last week:

"Section 6 says **** government can't intrude on a person or organization's religious rights **** unless it has a compelling government interest and is acting in the least intrusive way possible. Section 6 also includes an exemption that stops its use for "invidious discrimination" that's banned under state or federal law. "

The bill isn't meeting the condition set by Gov. Deal - that protection applies only to pastors and non-profits - so I don't see a "violation of trust" by the Governor on this issue.

The state senator says that "all of [Deal's] demands were met" - but the language remains in the current version of the bill. So I'm not exactly seeing straight-dealing by the state senator on this issue.
