Due to some logistical reasons, I checked my suitcase today. It's so much easier, baggage claim delays aside. But the $25 is a pain in the ass. -- nm

My suitcase was half empty. I could have probably shoved everything into my backpack.

Take your bag through security with you and then check it for the free at the gate when they make the inevitable offer to do so. -- nm

I hate that. Seriously I think they should charge people who carry on their bags fees and checked bags should be free.

I never see it happening (too much revenue in checked bags). And delayed/mishandled bag rates are unacceptable.

Delta's actually got this figured out I think: Bags promised in 20 minutes* or you get 2500 miles

Also please explain to me why on some flights you can valet bags for free. Is that only on small planes where the overheads are too small? -- nm

Yes, that's the smaller planes (usually 50-seaters) where the bins are not big enough for rollaboards. -- nm

I've never thought about this, but I totally agree. -- nm

wrestling baggage slows filling/exiting the plane the most, but then you have a half dozen employees doing it for $$ an hour -- nm

question: if you carry on into the plane, but the overheads are all full and the stew says you have to check, do they charge you? -- nm

Nope. Most airlines allow you to gate check a bag at no cost, especially when the flight is full or overbooked.

aha, so if they are overbooked and you checked a bag, that pretty much guarantees you'll be on board because they won't want to find you bag? -- nm

On AA and DL (the two airlines I've mostly flown lately) they *always* make an announcement at the gate

No charge. It's a small plane, so I would likely have had to check.

no. they practically beg you to give them carry-ons to check free at that point -- nm
