It's not insurance, you're paying for them to waive their right to sue you or go after your insurance if you damage the car.

some, yes; but others still have one kind of coverage or another and/or offer lower-price supplemental insurance. -- nm

Usually it's only secondary liability that kicks in after your insurance pays unless your card has a fee. Then it might be primary insurance. -- nm
