In most cases, no you do not need it. -- (edited)

Most auto insurance policies insure the driver (you) regardless of the car being driven. But it wouldn't hurt to double-check with your insurance company.
And most credit card companies also offer a form of rental car insurance if you use their card to purchase the rental, but again, it's worth confirming with your credit-card issuer.
