awhile back, I mentioned this might be happening - now it has. san francisco will be the first city in the country to offer workers fully paid

parental leave, eventually making all employers of 20 or more people pay 45% (55 comes from the state) for six weeks leave.

of course, ideally everyone would be able to take that time off; but I've been torn some about this because of that low 20, and because many large companies offer supplemental disability insurance for a modest amount*. I wish there had been some meeting in the middle there. will be interesting, at least, to see how it plays out.

*as the linked piece says, some companies offer nice leave plans outright; but those are rarer. and, while I'm asterisking, I've said it before and I'll say it again now: my supplemental insurance made things much much easier for me when I was off work for 2+ years after the big accident, and I encourage everyone to check if it's offered. took my income to 2/3 what it would have been if I was working, only without the same taxes on that supplemental portion, which made it have more oomph.
