I've always thought it would be cool, though harder to make a show if it was more free form.

Like, here are the 5 places you have to go to get clues. You can do them in any order. Then they have to be competent travelers and line up multiple trips and stops, get the clues and get the next one.
I think that would be fascinating to do, at least. Not sure if it would be as fun to watch.
