I think audiences have changed. The era of "Who Shot JR?" is over.

I'm not saying it's fair but you can't do what TWD did Sunday. Those kind of cliff hangers don't always work. It wouldn't have been so bad had the show subtly hinted, "someone major dies in this episode". That's dog whistle for, "tune in and see who dies" not "tune in, someone dies and you get to find out when we come back,"

I point to GoT as to how to kill a major character/s and not revert to the tired timing of a Season Finale.

There really is a classic show in there for a better writing team. As is, it's B writing that occasionally surprises with As but often disappoints.
