Eugene is the smartest dude in the group. They spent the whole episode showing every possible thought that Rick came up with failing.

The Eugene comes up with the plan to use the RV as a distraction, and the group would sneak past.

The fact that Negan's group was prepared for that means that he or one of his group is pretty tactical as well.

How Eugene failed is less relevant to me than the fact that that plan also failed badly.

You are meant to feel the hopelessness that the group felt.
