a panic. They literally could have run anywhere. They could have inadvertently split up, gotten lost. They could have all ended up in another isolated clearing. All of those things could have happened as easily as what happened in the show.

See, what you say makes sense. One simple fix is to show Negan's group herding Rick's group. Not hard to do. It would have made sense rather than the random happenstance the writers sometimes rely on.
