Well, let's not overlook the reality the Padres haven't been good for 5 years.

Justin Upton last year had a 121 OPS+ so he was 21% better than average.

Seth Smith in 2014 was 134 OPS+

Headley and Quentin were 145 and 146 in 2012.

Their home park requires different types of hitters to thrive...but it can be done. It's no different than Seattle or Dodgers Stadium which is a substantial pitcher's paradise.
