you can google character names and 85% of them will show up as real people from history and the second is how the show keeps growing. Season 1 was within their own clan, season 2 their country, season 3 brings in England etc etc; mirrors the Vikings own expansion into the rest of Europe.

Plus they've cast it perfectly.
