I knew the NY primaries were closed. I knew registration deadline was 30 days prior to election. But did NOT know this -- (link)

If they weren't registered in NY at all, the way I'm reading it is that they had until March 25 to register.

Yup. My gf thought she had made the switch from no party to the democrats but the card came back

Hah. That sounds like a rule set by a state that has seen this kind of insanity before. -- nm

It protects the party and I'm okay with it. I would like same day registration, early voting and every other way to make voting easier.

I'm not sure how I feel about it to be honest but I'm leaning toward not liking it. -- (edited)

I could be okay with moving it to say Jan. 31st but I like that the parties are protected.

It's a bit early maybe, but I'm perfectly fine with parties saying "pick a side, people"

I could see 15 days for undecideds and 30 or 60 days for swapping ... Even less than 15 days, actually. -- nm

That would allow people that don't actually identify with the party to jump on board and have an influence on the primary. Each party would like to -- (edited)

Yeah, this is fair. I just mean for recruiting newbies ... but I take your point, and I see how it can impact that idea. -- nm

New voters should be allowed to register anytime they want and even on election day. I'd love for that to happen everywhere. -- nm

Another thing I'd like is for this nomination junk to not be in the news for two years at a time. I mean, while we're dreaming impossible dreams. -- nm

This I can agree with you on. It's too much for too long. -- nm

Yeah, NY doesn't do 15 day or same day for anyone. Even for brand new registrations, deadline was March 25 for April 19 primary.

That needs to change and hopefully it'll happen soon. There's discussions on same day registration and other things. -- nm
