I would generally agree with this except that I think "lifestyle" has solidified a reference and ideological position similar to other topics. -- (edited)

I don't know its origins (I imagine critique of bath houses and spread of AIDS etc in the Reagan era) but I think the use of that word is an intentional rejection and derision of acceptance of homosexuality on its face. It's used by a demographic of people who insist 1) that they know (just like rejection of climate science) that homosexuality is a simple choice of action like professional occupation, and 2) that it's inherently negative like a crime committed against another person or the community.
Bottom line is that it's a slur, no matter how it's said with a bright smile or equivocation.
Plus, I thought this was fairly well known for the past decade or so, which is why it's easy to spot.
