curious (semi)technical glitch that i'm experiencing at the library right now (concerning flash drives) ...

so, i have a 1 terrabyte external hardrive that I use for keeping virtually all of my files, documents, MP3 files, etc. on because it's supposed to be a more stable storage device long-term for all of my stuff. That being said, i do still have some of my flash drives, on 1 of which i have most all of my document files backed up for just emergency case situations and such. (speaking of, i need to back up some stuff this week. i haven't backed up a few things in probably a month).
anyway ... on some of the library computers, when i go to plug in my external hard drive, ... well, the external hard drive doesn't get "recognized", but the flash drives do. This happened to me last week and eventually i found a computer that would recognize the drive. This happened to me for the first time last week, and has happened again. one more time, and it's a pattern, right?
anyway, I guess i'm going to have to back up the files i use frequently so that, if it happens again and i can't find a computer that will recognize it, i'll at least have my most current version of some files to work on.
anyway, ST, is this a common occurance? is it something I should be concerned with?
