The party certainly isn't perfect and I resisted identifying as any party for years

In Texas, it was easier, because the primaries were open and you didn't have to pick a party on your registration unless you wanted to (I didn't). On primary day, you just told them which ballot you wanted
Which was handy in the very red county I was in for local elections
