I just don't think there's the kind of issues best served by being presented at a gathering intended to honor him and tell him how awesome he is. either hit them in advance and deal, or withdraw; or do it in post-game interviews or other platforms - those are better bets to not come across as ungrateful. (there may well be gratitude in his other comments at the event, but the black keys' response didn't hint at that.)
I really think something else may have been wrong, aside from what we've discussed, because he's successfully collaborated with other artists, including in recent years; and he's mentioned liking the work of others, etc. to seem dismissive is particularly weird.
