he's a pastor, used to talking to people, and it was something personally extremely offensive to him.

he gets to his car, sees that word, and doesn't go right back in to say something like,"this *just* happened" and to make sure the correct employee could be identified?
unless I'm super time-pressed and/or really extra hurting, no way I'd not go back in; and, at the very least, I'd take a photo of the box and the cake in my car with the receipt and a time-stamp.
