Merchandising is obviously huge, but that's not the point here. Batman and Superman were going to sell toys anyway.

The hard-copy movie market is in steep decline, so that's a non-factor to the bottom line these days. What we're discussing is the performance of the movie itself. Had it been good and a box office draw, all the ancillaries you discuss would have elevated dramatically. This is the opposite of the rising tide lifting all boats. The sinking ship is killing all the passengers.
