That would be a tough one for me in a closed primary state. Not sure how I'd deal with it.

Maybe Be R in non-POTUS years and D in POTUS years? Wouldn't want to miss out on my say in POTUS.
Though in most closed states (cough cough not bizarre NY) you have up until about a month before primary to decide so if POTUS is already looking decided, or moving the direction you like, you could stay R I guess to vote in local race.
Where I lived in TX was like this: the R primary was the general election for purposes of local, county, start elections. But primary was open.
Chicago was the opposite of course and the D primary was the general election.
