Maybe ST is smarter and can help me remember the title of a book ...

I picked up a book from the library last summer, but managed to read only half of it before I had to return it. I've been wanting to get back to it, but now I can't remember the title. Or the author.

It's a fantasy novel, the first in a trilogy I think.

The protagonist is a sort of thief/magician who gets caught up in political events and must help find a magic item in an extensive underground labyrinth, far, far, away.

The book opens with him prowling about his home city in a kingdom on the verge of war with a neighboring kingdom. Through various fights, calamities, and other events, he is forced to accompany an expedition to this dark, dangerous underground labyrinth on the edge of the kingdom -- apparently because he has delved into those dungeons before and was one of the few people to emerge alive.

Does this ring a bell with anyone?
