The was supposed to be about her being adorkable. That lucked out with the supporting cast. They quickly pivoted to Schmidt, which worked. Then they lucked out with the rest. The subtle weirdness of Winston is genius. The a few times a season appearance of characters like Outside Dave, show how confident the writers are.
