When HP bought Compaq, both were still successful PC makers. The truth is that a collapse was coming in the PC market, but no one saw it, so that's moot.
What HP failed to do was merge their two product lines in any way that made sense. That's analogous to the same company owning Universal and Paramount and both studios continuing to operate independently, releasing movies on the same weekend and competing for the same audience.
HP's logical approach would have been to buy up their competitor so they could kill it, but for whatever reason, they didn't.
The analogy applied to politics would be: Cruz (HP) names Kasich (Compaq) as his running mate so Kasich (Compaq) drops out of the race (less competition) but then Kasich (Compaq) continues to campaign for President (Hey!)
