Re: the direwolf - the theory is that Jon transferred his consciousness into the wolf, much in the way Bran is able to live inside his wolf Summer. The books are more suggestive of this. For example, the first scene in Book 5 is about a wildling on the run who ends up being killed and transferring his personality inside a wolf. The last scene is Jon's death.
However, GRRM leaves a lot of ambiguity with how magic works - like with the hatching of the dragon eggs. There's no clear answer why that worked out the way it did, but there are several explanations.
