From what I've heard over the summer... (spoils)

...Is that GRRM probably felt he had to "kill" Jon Snow in order to relinquish him from his Oath of the Night's Watch while retaining the honour of not breaking it, even on a technicality.
The presumption is that this frees him to return south.
