There is a theory that Melisandre is the daughter of Brynden Rivers and Shiera Seastar.
Basically there was a Targaryen king, Aegon IV, who had a lot of mistresses and sired a lot of bastard children, including Brynden and Shiera (they were half brother and sister). All those bastards led to a civil war between the Targaryens, complicated by a love triangle between Shiera, Brynden and another half-brother. I don't know if they'll go into this detail in the show though.
Brynden Rivers is still around btw - he's currently living under a tree teaching Bran how to magic.
