2020 becomes Cruz because he's ideologically pure...then he'll lose because he's one of the most unlikable humans in politics.

But the true believers will say that the party establishment didn't back him as they should (despite now condemning the party establishment for suckling up to Trump)

so it's at least 2024 before the rigid ideologists run out of excuses for why they simply aren't able to attain the highest seat in the land.
