and it's a small backpack, doesn't weigh much.

It's really if we had to stay in the car or a shelter, we'd have the basics.

Small first aid kit (really just some large bandages, painkillers, antibiotic ointment). Toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, shampoo sample, travel deodorant, a few other basic toiletries.
A roll of toilet paper. Dollar store rain ponchos. Big glow sticks (good for wearing if you are walking in a black out, or in smoke.) a couple large garbage bags. a roll of dimes (for payphones, if cell towers are down.) a deck of cards. a swiss army knife. a bunch of candles and matches. a tshirt, a pair of socks and clean underwear (one of each for both of us.) ear plugs (sleeping in a room full people would be tough.) a photocopy of our insurance and passport pics. Some paper, a big sharpie, small roll of electrical tape. a bit of cat food. Spare chargers. and a battery/crank radio-flashlight. oh, and another small led flashlight.

i think that's it.
