i imagine this is what happened, filmmakers had rights previously had no idea they expired, did the announcement,

person who rights had reverted back to *sees* big announcement, calls up film-maker and says "uh, yeah, you don't own that anymore."
I bet money is currently being discussed, and it comes back.
