I had a prior gen Elantra and loved the car. The Optima is the "oldest" of the current gen of midsized cars so the tech won't be as fresh.

First, use Truecar to get an idea of what you will pay for each car. You can even lock in a price before you test drive if you want.
Look at Edmunds to get reviews of the cars you want to test drive. You'll see their review as well as driver reviews. These can be helpful.
The Wirecutter has detailed reviews of types of cars that will put them against each other.
I'd seriously look at the current gen Prius. From everything I've seen they're not the most boring car on the road anymore. If I have to buy a new car because mine is being bought back, the Prius will be on my shortlist.
