What's strange to me is that they had made quite a bit of headway on fixing what was wrong already.

There was clearly a good bit still to go, but the game was functional. I traded a lot last night and it was moving well. It still amazes me that they screwed up game play so much from the outset, but going back now seems a bit of an overreaction too.
