Krusty, "pressing" charges is a myth

You don't press a charge - the police either will or won't investigate and lay a charge on someone and the assaultee's willingness to testify might enter into that, but they can charge someone even if the person assaulted doesn't want them to. (think about domestic cases, for instance)

What really prevents things like this from turning into court cases is a standard acceptance of risk - while illegal in the sport, it's within the bounds of "normal" behaviour - essentially by playing pro baseball you consent to the possibility of something like this happening. if it results in extraordinary injury that's where it could become a court case, and there's been a couple of hockey incidents that have risen to this level (McSorely, Ciccarelli, Bertuzzi).
