Considering how off the wall the show can be at times (and even messy on occasion) it was a tightly delivered ep (if still crazy) (spoils)

I think they had to come up with a "plausible" explanation of how to have the bomb not kill people. Plausible being very loosely defined here since the water apparently would have a more limited protective effect.
I was pretty sure they were going to have to kill Simon. He was almost too complex a character and too good an actor for them to sustain, but they also wrote the arc of his story this season perfectly that I think it was unavoidable to have him end this way
