spent any time abroad. they just can't do anything about it, because government. sure it works as far as controlling flow of information and free speech works, but it's not anything that could easily happen outside an authoritarian regime. realistically it's not much different than Soviet control of the media. probably less bad, given there are fairly easy ways around it.
