X is the SUV. 3 is the upcoming sedan. It's possible they are testing a 3 in your area, but it was probably an X.

The X is easy to distinguish. The front door and rear door handles are side by side (rear door handles are set to the front of the door, not the back). The S and 3 have handles for front and rear doors in the traditional position .

But if you think it was a hatchback, that could be the S. It's trunk deck hinges near the midline of the roof.
