They've done a great job of showing throughout the series that Jon Snow's tactics are generally atrocious. He's 100% impulse. He gets away with it so often due to his skill as a fighter, which surpasses his father. Last night was merely the latest example of his getting the right result from doing the wrong thing passionately.

It's also what got him stabbed in the stomach repeatedly by supposed allies.

What was great about the episode is that it revealed Sansa has learned from Littlefinger. Every piece of advice she gave her brother was spot-on.
